Procaine /Procaine HCI Basic Information:
Firstly, Procaine HCl is a highly potent local anesthetic and antiarrhythmic agent. It is widely used in various medical procedures, including infiltration anesthesia, epidural anesthesia, surface anesthesia (particularly for thoracoscopic or abdominal surgeries that involve mucosal anesthesia), and nerve conduction blocks.
Secondly, Procaine HCl belongs to the category of amide-based local anesthetics. As the dosage increases, both its effectiveness and potential toxicity also increase. It demonstrates an anti-convulsant effect at sub-toxic blood levels. However, convulsions may arise when blood concentrations surpass 5 micrograms per milliliter.
Thirdly, At lower doses, Procaine HCl enhances the efflux of potassium ions (K+) in cardiomyocytes, which subsequently decreases myocardial automaticity and exerts antiarrhythmic effects
Procaine HCI: A Premier Amide Local Anesthetic.
Topical Procaine has shown effectiveness in reducing pain from postherpetic neuralgia in some patients, but further research is needed before recommending it as a primary treatment. Additionally, it provides temporary relief for tinnitus, reducing its effects by about two-thirds.
Procaine Hydrochloride, administered intravenously or intramuscularly, is specifically used for the acute management of ventricular arrhythmias, such as those occurring during myocardial infarction or cardiac surgery.
